Environmental Sustainability

From our founding in 1999, Webster's has been serving fair-trade, organic, bird-friendly coffees exclusively, offering our customers coffee that ensured safety and well-being for the farmers and the environment. We were also the first local café to start offering biodegradable & compostable to-go cups.

Our cafe has been using local produce and organic choices since we first expanded our food menu back in 2004. Now we offer full catering services and will build specialty menus for your events, especially those centered around vegan, gluten-free, local and organic choices for your guests.

A Fair & Safe Workplace

Webster's pays all of our employees a living wage, a rate that's well above minimum wage and not dependent on tips. We ensure that any tips that café staff receive go directly to them, helping to boost their income even higher. All employees also agree to a zero-tolerance sexual harassment policy and are committed to inclusion.

Inclusive Community

Our staff and our regular customers share a commitment to create a welcoming, safe, and inclusive environment for everyone who enters. Webster's has long supported local community groups by offering free meeting space, including groups like the Centre LGBTQ Support Network and Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ) of Central PA. We also take pride in providing a platform for both local and touring musicians, visual artists, and poets through our events.

 Elaine Meder-Wilgus, owner/general manager

Business Owner & Community Builder

Elaine is the owner of Webster's Bookstore Cafe, but got here with the help of a a long line of supporters. She knew, despite how crazy it seemed to others, that by combining all of her passions under one roof – books, coffee, food, performance & people – that the community would support Webster's. After all, Webster's isn't just about the wares that fill it: it's about the people.

Stop by and talk to Elaine about catering an upcoming event, come watch or participate in an Open Mic event, enjoy lunch by yourself or with a friend, grab a cup of our delicious coffee or one of our 80+ loose leaf teas/tisanes. Or just come in and browse the stock of over 80,000 used books and vintage vinyl.
